than being in Orlando with nothing to do.
Can’t connect to my work computer so I’m stuck being a nuisance to the company I’m visiting. Fun fun fun. At least they have nice offices…and a friggin cafe in their office…with their own barista. I am so going to look into that when I run my own company…gotta be profitable enough though.
Orlando’s an interesting city…have to say. You’d think that a city like this (I’m in the downtown area…not in the tourist mecca to the west) wouldn’t have much character since it largely grew up because of Disneyworld and the like. But, it’s got that small-city-that’s-been-around-for-a-while feel. Something I always miss in Los Angeles (unless I wander around Hollywood but who does that?) is the lack of old buildings in some measure more than a single city hall building or something.
The visit to SF last week made me feel the same way…it’s great to see the juxtaposition of new steel and glass buildings next to brick and crafted stone buildings. It’s that side-by-side display of antiquated buildings built with craftsmanship versus glass and steel engineering calculations (with some style, of course) rendered into the material world.
I wonder how it’ll feel to look at some of these modern structures in another 20 years when they’re “antiquated”? Their stylings are more aesthetically generic so they might last better than all those buildings made in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s with cottage-cheese roofs and ceilings, curvy strokes and retro-space accents…but, who knows?
